Why fixed-wing medical flights favor executive airports

A dedicated air ambulance mission is a ramp operation, not a terminal operation. The patient arrives by ground ambulance, crosses the ramp, and boards directly into the aircraft. Executive and reliever airports are built around that kind of general aviation activity, which is why they handle most medical flight traffic.

  • Ramp access for ground ambulances. At an executive field, the ground ambulance can typically drive directly to the aircraft for a tarmac transfer. At a major commercial airport, escort procedures, security checkpoints, and vehicle restrictions can add steps.
  • Less congestion. Airline hubs sequence traffic around scheduled carrier peaks. A medical flight at a quieter field usually faces fewer departure and arrival delays.
  • Faster patient loading. Shorter distances between the ramp entrance and the parked aircraft reduce the time the patient spends in transfer, which matters for a patient on a stretcher with medical equipment.
